How to make a Lanyard (DIY)
Learn how to make a Lanyard with this simple DIY tutorial. With only a few tools needed, you'll be able to craft your very own Lanyard in no time! Looking to mass produce these? We have a simpler solution here.
Materials list:
- Thick fabric for the lanyard measuring 2.5 x 36.5 inches (adjust this to suit your requirements)
- Clip attachment (J clip, lobster clip, strap clip, personalised strap clip, ID reels, keyfob, carabiner reel)
- Sewing machine / needle & thread
- Scissors
- Iron
- Ruler
- Clips / pins (to temporarily hold in place)
Step 1 - Cut the fabric
Start by cutting the fabric on the straight grain, ensuring a non-stretchy lanyard.
Optionally, join strips using a diagonal seam, adding your own creative touch!
Step 2: Press the fabric lengthwise
Press the raw edges towards the middle and fold the fabric in half.
Secure the folded fabric with clips or pins. If you don't have these, you will need to immediately sew the lanyard.
Step 3: Thread on the clip
Thread the lobster clip onto the lanyard before closing the loop.
Ensure proper incorporation of the clip into the final design.
Step 4: Sew the ends
Unfold the ends, align the right sides, and sew them together using a 1/4 inch seam. Press the seam for a polished appearance.
Step 5: Sew the sides
Fold the lanyard into quarters, sewing along both edges. Adjust the lobster clip's position as you sew to avoid interference.
Step 6: Stitch the clip in place
Fold the lanyard with the clip at the end and secure it with additional stitches. This not only reinforces the clip but also provides a neat finishing touch.
Your Lanyard is complete. Wear your one of a kind handmade lanyard with pride! Carry your ID by clipping a holder onto this, carry your keys, or anything else you want!
